Upon
return to the church a benediction concludes the processional
event. Up until 1958, the festivities continued into the evening
with a band concert, races, athletic contests, and finally, a
display of fireworks.
Some of the bands that have
played over the years are: Hartford City Band, East Greenwich
Band, Rizza Band, Columbus Band, Silver Cornets,
George C. Moore Girls Drum Corps, Niantic Columbus Band, Westerly
Band and the Venezia Band.
Since the evening events were
discontinued, scholarships have been awarded with the funds to
benefit local students. Masses are also celebrated for the deceased
members of the Society. In 1988, the Society donated the money
to build a handicap ramp at the front entrance of St. Michael's
Church.
At formal functions, the members
are distinguished by the wearing of a purple colored velvet neck
band, holding a gold colored medal, inscribed with the images
of angels and the Blessed Virgin Mary.
Since November 17, 2012 Maria Assunta
Society has donated $76,000.00 for the restoration of Saint Michael's Church.
THE GEORGE LARSON FAMILY, IN MEMORY OF THEIR SON , DONATED $40,000.00 IN 2013, TO THE MAS MEMORIAL FUND
